From painted trompe-l'oeils in Pompeii to 19th century stereoscopes: through the ages mankind has tried to create convincing artificial environments in many different ways.

Because the technique was in its infancy and very expensive, it was mainly used in scientific and military applications.
Since the introduction of the Oculus Rift goggles in 2012, virtual reality is on the rise again. Companies like HTC/Valve, Microsoft, Samsung and Sony are developing and supporting the technique.
